Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968) historien de l’art d’origine allemande, soutient sa th\u00e8se de doctorat sur Albrecht D\u00fcrer en 1914. Il travaille \u00e0 l’Institut Warburg, fond\u00e9 en 1921 par Aby Warburg, et contribue \u00e0 sa reconnaissance internationale. \u00c0 l’Institut Warburg, il fr\u00e9quente le philosophe Ernst Cassirer. En 1933, il doit \u00e9migrer aux \u00c9tats-Unis, enseigne \u00e0 l’universit\u00e9 de New York puis \u00e0 l’universit\u00e9 de Princeton. Panofsky reste le plus \u00e9minent repr\u00e9sentant de l’iconologie. En explorant les rapports entre les images et les sources \u00e9crites, en articulant histoire des formes et analyses monographiques, l’iconologie de Panofsky n’est pas seulement une illustration de la s\u00e9miotique structurale : elle apporte une contribution majeure \u00e0 la th\u00e9orie de l’art et confirme son r\u00f4le central dans les sciences de la culture.<\/p>\n
